From Eminem to Metallica, Jay Z to AC/DC and everything in between, whether you are ol’skool or new school, warmup music has been a staple in pre-game rituals for nearly every athlete, regardless of their sport. The key is, are you listening to the right music?

Many athletes use music as a method of preparing for a game or event as a way to focus and concentrate. By tuning out the outside world with their headphones plugged in, music often helps one concentrate and envision what their want to accomplish and how they are going to achieve their goal. Whether you need a bit of inspiration and motivation, or something to build your confidence and swagger the type of music that you listen to before you head out for your next practice or game is all part of your preparation for success. For all of those who appreciate Phil Collins “In The Air Tonight” and the classic drum solo, the preceding calmness may make some wonder how this could be a pump up song. Just ask Meek Mill who found it worthy to create a remixed version in 2018.

Think about it like this, you are in your room getting ready, in the car on the way to the game or in the locker room prior to tip off, are you listening to the same type of music all the way through? Is it realistic to listen to hype music and keep that level of intensity throughout the whole game, whether you are on the court or on the bench? Consider what kind of mood you are in and what kind of game are you in the mind frame to play? Are you nervous and anxious? Then maybe something a little more chill that will help calm the nerves and allow you to concentrate and mentally focus is more in store. On the other hand, if you are a bit lethargic and need a boost of energy, then by all means rock out!
